Jenny Sheppard |  February 23, 2011

ANDREW Inglis took out the Ponderosa Timber and Hardware Senior Victorian Showjumping Championship at the weekend.

Inglis, from Maroota, rode his big bay imported mare Amira, jumping a slick fast round against the clock.

Runner-up was another in-form rider, Yarra Glen's Brook Dobbin, riding his evergreen little grey, GP Shine, with last year's Victorian champion Tim Clarke, from Mortlake, third.

The titles were hosted by the Port Phillip Show Jumping Club on the club's all-weather arena at the Lang Lang Showgrounds.

The organising committee, headed by prolific jumping competitor Phillip Stephens, from Warragul, did its upmost to keep an excellent jumping footing despite this year's record rainfall.

This event is also the second leg of the 2011 Premier League Grand Prix series.

The final leg will be held at the Premier Floats Showjumping Championships on March 20 at Teesdale, where the combination with most points will receive $1500 in prizemoney.

International course designer Leeson Sirett, from Colbinabbin, provided strong, technical courses for the three days of competition, where faultless jumping was always rewarded.

Only three horses jumped clear in the first round of the 1.40m to 1.50m senior title.

The 2011 Victorian Young Horse Championship went to Brooke Campbell, from Ebenezer, riding Star Peptalk, from local star Julie Sproull, riding Brown Nova, and Trevor March, from Tatura, third.

The event was sponsored for the 11th time by the Heywood family's Ponderosa Timber and Hardware.

Jamie Kermond, from Garfield North, won the National Bank D grade title, riding Copabella Cadiz. This combination also won the Joint Rejuvenate D grade.

Alex Rooney, also from Garfield North, won the Cardinia Council Futurity class, riding Hylton Park Calypso, and Amanda Barclay, from Lara, won the Superior Foods 1.25m class, riding SL Itza Worry.

Jamie Winning, from Ebenezer, won the Greig Family and Vicky McCathie maiden D grade, riding Yandoo Aphrodite, and Andrew Inglis won the D grade AM5, riding Grandiego, owned by Leanne and Laurie Grant, from Donvale.

Wes Joyce, from Jumbunna, won the Merlin Park A and B grade championship riding his lovely grey, LH Warsaw.

The Premier Floats Victorian Speed Championship saw a win to Melissa Julius, from the Wimmera, riding Another Sportsman, ahead of Jamie Winning's Hedge.

Third place went to Black Marlin, owned by Angela Ramsay, from Albury.

A Berry good show

Jenny Sheppard |  February 9, 2011

OF the 206 shows held annually in NSW, Berry is among the most traditional and, according to its proud committee members, one of the best on the state's south coast.

It is typical of the annual shows with which many rural Australians have grown up - a mixture of agricultural exhibits and events and a wonderful meeting place, bustling with characters.

This interesting district, famous for its dairy industry, has run agricultural exhibitions dating back to 1887.

While rain and more rain caused havoc across Victoria and many events were cancelled, the heat was on at Berry.

Friday's 39.5C was the hottest day ever recorded for the historic coastal town.

The organising committee provided free bottled water all weekend to help with the humid conditions.

Warren Priestly, from Nowra, designed the jumping courses on the irrigated turf arena, which provided improved footing for the horses.

Andrew Inglis, from Maroota, won the Nowra Saddleworld Most Successful Jumping Rider of the show award after he won the C grade, riding Tom Smith's Casper, and the Bob Monteith Memorial Grand Prix, riding Amira.

James Arkins, from Sydney, won the Jack McGee Memorial C and D-grade championship riding Dreamtime Invader; and Jamie Smith, from Bega, won the Kevin Robinson Memorial B-grade championship riding Waitawhile.

Local Miss Showgirl entrant Sydney Roberts, from Nowra, won the two D-grade classes, riding Maksim.

Jamie Grant, from Canberra, won the George Miller Memorial A and B grade riding the big grey gelding Cool K, and Millie Clarke, from Nowra, won the Daisy Callaghan Memorial Junior Championship riding Connollys High Time. Jamie Priestly, also from Nowra, triumphed in Friday's junior class riding On The Dark Horse.

Showjumping continues this week with the Nowra Showjumping Spectacular.

Kiama show a classic

Jenny Sheppard |  February 3, 2011

THE last weekend in January means show time for Kiama, on the NSW south coast.

Located beside Kiama's surf beach, the town's showground is one of the most picturesque in Australia.

Families can enjoy the seaside atmosphere, stunning views and the rural life on display.

The event, run over two days, is best described as the community putting Kiama on show.

Warren Priestly, from Nowra, designed the showjumping courses, with the positioning of Saturday's treble combination creating an optical challenge.

Andrew Inglis, from Maroota, continued his successful run, winning the showjumping riders point score championship after having won five of the eight senior jumping classes.

Inglis won the John and Margaret Hinton D-grade championship riding Grandiego, owned by Leanne and Laurie Grant from Donvale.

He then won Friday's A and B-grade class and the Charlie McGlinchey Memorial Grand Prix, riding his imported mare Amira. Inglis also won Top Score riding Paul Kelly's Licara and the Six Bar, riding Tom Smith's Casper.

Up and coming junior rider Jamie Priestly, from Nowra, made it a quinella in the Coffee Time Junior Championship, riding Painted Warrior and On The Dark Horse.

James Arkins, from Sydney, won the Jill Ovens memorial C-grade event on Dreamtime Invader.

Mel Turner, from Bermagui, took the quinella in the Allan Norman memorial young rider championship, riding Clarksym Swer and Beachchick.

Vicki Brighton, from Nowra, won the Alf Jones Memorial riding Mr Fugitive and Danielle Butcher, from Pheasants Nest, won the Philip Parbury Memorial C-grade on Twins Lovesong.

The popular NSW South Coast and Southern Tablelands showjumping series continues this weekend at Berry.
